Contacts.

Hi everyone,

Myself and those of my Executive take the issue of communication very seriously and it frustrates us, me especially, when we go out of our way to address the distribution of news and updates of what is happening within the association to our members, we continue to get negative feedback because we do not send information out in hardcopy. It is the new age. Our messages and news is distributed in this fashion.

  1. To all Secretaries via email. Clubs responsibility to ensure we have the correct contact and details
  2. Next day via the NZACA Website
  3. Then via the Facebook page

Re 2 & 3. There are several members from each club who have access to these media outlets who are more than capable of taking any relevant info back to their respective clubs.

There is no acceptance by this Executive that clubs are not being informed. Likewise, any issues or questions that any club may have, will be addressed as quickly as is possible but a response within 24 hours, if it is sent to or emailed to the Secretary (secretary@nzaca.co.nz) or myself (president@nzaca.co.nz)

Both Brent and myself check our emails at least twice per day.

Continuing to work for the betterment of our members

NZACA Update

It is with huge sadness I advise everyone that our Executive and Members Manager, Marko Lucas has been involved in a serious housefire and is in critical condition in the Middlemore Burns Unit. Whatever road this will take him he will not be active within the ACA for a very lengthy period.

Also, following this tragedy someone has accessed the members@nzaca email and have sent emails asking for people to gather funding to pay bills on Marko’s behalf. You have my absolute assurance he is in no state of lucidness to even think of doing this let alone actually writing. Please ignore these requests.

Any affiliation or membership requests, please send to me at: president@nzaca.co.nz.

thank you

A week of it.

Hi all,
I am back home after a week of putting the NZACA and our brand out there. Our NZACA Trailer followed me all the way and did draw some interest and conversation while it was out in the public.

After some quality mentoring at Almorah, Scott McIndoe of LegaSea’s domiciled office, Monday & Tuesday, I had a great meeting, on Wednesday morning, with Okuma and am happy to announce they have put some skin on the table and will be our Major Sponsor for the coming year. Our nationals will be, as they once were, called The NZACA Okuma Nationals. The package they are providing is substantial to our body and I would like to personally acknowledge the support of Scott, Sam Woolford and especially Marty Johannsen, Managing Director of CD Rods for getting this across the line. To say I am stoked would be an understatement. I also worked with Sam, putting together a Funding Application to cover further promotion and growth of the Association.

Tuesday night saw me addressing the Nth Shore, Bethell’s and Wanderers Clubs out in Milford. A great night and many thanks to these clubs for the invitation and turning out. One thing I addressed was the matter of Regional representation and I am very keen that this becomes part of our network. The Executive are looking for someone to take on this role in each of five regions. Northern, Auckand, Central, West Coast and Wellington, which will include our South Island Club Canterbury. Those Reps will liase with clubs within those regions, promote the ACA to non affiliated clubs and report back to the Executive. Think about it and please take it up. We are continuing to grow and we need these outreaches in place.

Thursday through to Sunday saw me in Tauranga representing the NZACA at the NZ Sport Fishing Council’s AGM/Conference. Once again, I cannot speak highly enough of the acceptance and respect we are shown here. We hold our place. I must also acknowledge the NZSFC’s Fisheries Management sub Committee. This team is so proffesional in all that pertains to fisheries management and it is with pride that I take a seat at these meetings on your behalf. I will be/am looking for someone to step into this space.

While at this conference, I had the opportunity to hear Dr Randall Bess’s presentation on “Our Future Catch” Most of you will have read my views on this. I have mellowed a little but retain a strong view on licensing. Not because of what it represents so much but how it will be used to benefit us. It wont!!  Apart from that, the push for a “Peak Body”, that recreational fishers are responsible for the lack of stock, ok a couple of other issues, I am confident we are all seeking the same outcome, an abundant, sustainable inshore fishery. I have the luxury of hearing Bess again this Thursday.

Once again, I am available to speak to your club and likewise, I will tow our trailer anywhere and hold a casting event if you have somewhere to stretch the nylon.

Just a little thing to finish off. Leadership is not about imposing your beliefs on those you represent, leadership is about allowing them to hear from all sides and if they want it, your guidance.

Awesome to be representing you out there but it is great to be home

Update

There is much being written, discussed and reported with regard to the NZ Initiatives latest proposition to the management of Recreational Fishing.

The first point I would like to advise you all of is, this group (The NZI) is made up of the leaders of Industry. What was once called the round table. Further, the main funder of this study by Dr Randall Bess is from out of the USA and owned by the American Fishing Industry.

Having undertaken and also been involved in the whole issue through our alignment with LegaSea and grasping the manner in which this study has been carried out, it is my opinion that the underlying desired outcome is for our rights to the fishery to be intergrated into the QMS. This must not be allowed to happen. This was turned down by us in 2001 and this latest proposal is the very same, written in a different format.

One of the points of discussion the NZI have raised is Recreational licensing. Now in a perfect world I can see it would have some merit but the fact is, you cannot have Licensing without proportionality and the same in reverse. One other point I have a major issue with is the call for a “Peak Body” to represent Rec fishers. On this issue let me address the failure of the last two. The Rec Fishing Council and the offshoot, Our Fishing Future. Both entities involved the same leaders and both entities failed us and failed us miserably. I am totally appalled at the recent push by these same people to attempt to reinvent both these entities after returning from Australia where they accompanied Dr Bess on a pre empted road trip. There is more that I could address on this matter but I will leave that ’til another day.

The two leading representitives of Recreational Fishers is clearly the NZ Sport Fishing Council and the NZ Angling & Casting Association. Two representitive groups with a history of more than 60 years each and yet Ministry and Government ignore us. They would sooner talk with these two defunct entities or the supposed leaders of.

Leading the way and with solid support from us is LegaSea,  the NZSFC Advocacy Body. I am more than happy to claim they have, along with our alignment and that of other like bodies, more than 100,0000 supporters along with substantial Funding from many leaders within our sector. The NZACA is proud to have our logo on many of the submissions, news releases and letters to Government that LegaSea put forward. We have a seat at the NZSFC Fisheries Management Sub Committee table and we are present and involved.

So in conclusion I urge that you attend one of the meetings around the country where they are discussing this NZ Initiative and turn down their proposals. It is not about us, it is about taking away our rights. Recreationals fishers are not increasing pressure on the fishery. We are actually declining. Clubs are disappearing, fish are not as abundant as they should be and we are not responsible for causing this.

On a lighter note, next week I travel to Nth Auckland to speak to the Nth Shore SCC, Bethells SCC and Wanderers SCC. I then travel down to Tauranga to attend the NZ Sport Fishing Council Conference. No rest for the wicked but proud to be representing you all.

I am always available to join you at one of your meetings.
