The Wellington Surfcasting and Angling Club is Wellington’s premier fishing club. Established in 1958 the Club has a strong tradition of competitive fishing throughout the country and has won national titles on many occasions.
The Club has over 100 members of all ages and is affiliated to both the New Zealand Angling and Casting Association and the New Zealand Sports Fishing Council.
The objectives of the Club are to promote and foster sport fishing in the Wellington Region and to this end we have both Shore and Boat sections in which members can compete at senior and junior levels.
Our Club season runs from 1st July to 30th June during which time we hold 12 shore and 8 boat competitions. Different points are awarded for the fish caught depending on their specie, weight and the line used. Trophies are awarded at our annual social and prize giving night for the best total of accumulated points in each of the competition sections. We also have a number of other trophies and awards for fish caught out of competition during the season. Sponsored prizes are also awarded for Fish of the Month and lucky angler competition participants.
As well as competitions we run a number of outings which have a more social context. These give new members an opportunity to pick up tips and ideas to try for themselves. These events include:-
Club nights on the 1st Weds of each month
Social shore fishing evenings on the 2nd & 4th Tues of each month
The Club shares club rooms with the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club, located on Evans Bay Parade. This venue includes bar / catering facilities and provides an ideal waterfront location for holding competition weigh-ins and social events.
The Club has a well equipped Fishing Lodge situated on the South Coast near Karori light, which can be accessed by 4wd either by following the coastal track from Owhiro Bay or through private property from South Makara Rd. The lodge has it’s own power, heating and hot / cold water supply. It can sleep up to 20 people. Fishing from the beach in front of the lodge is some of the best in Wellington. Club members are able to use to lodge at any time on a shared basis. Usage fees apply to help cover costs.
The Club produces a regular colour newsletter “WSAC News” to update members on events and competition points standings, as well as general items of interest and pic’s.
